A Michigan high school student was expelled this week after attacking another student who was advocating for gay rights.
Video of that attack was posted on the Internet less than two hours later, generating broad attention.
A second freshman girl who police say was involved in the incident, since has moved out of the district and so cannot be disciplined by the school, according to Superintendent Eivor Swan.
In the criminal investigation, both girls — Crystal VanderLaan and Sydnee Rae Longhurst — still face one count each of aggravated assault in Allegan County Juvenile Court. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in a juvenile detention center and a $1,000 fine.
