James Roy was kind enough to invite me to be an extra in his pride performance on Sunday — I was one of the anti-gay protesters holding picket signs at the back of the stage during “Rise Above.”
Of all the crazy things that happened over the weekend what blew me away the most was the overwhelming response of the crowd when during that same song, “Rise Above,” two brides come out on stage, kissed and threw a bouquet. I’d been backstage while the Demented Divas and Calpernia Adams were performing and didn’t hear anything that even compared to the excitement James Roy’s two brides generated.
But I gotta tell you something — they’re straight.
Yep.
Turns out James had asked a number of his lesbian friends to play those roles and they all refused so alas he had to offer the parts to two straight girls.

I don’t mean to attack the author or the blog itself but…
I read this blog and I had to say a few things because I feel that the cynically inclined may look at this given admission and down play the energy and charge of the event.
So yes its an interesting tid-bit that those lovely girls who helped with the performance are straight. I am admittedly a little disappointed that a lesbian couple wasn’t able to represent their own community, however since I know that somehow someone will take this several ways I have to include:
Many of the girls asked were just plain out too shy to get on stage for that.
One of the brides was originally in the video her dependability and knowledge of James’ song and ideals were established.
Third, I think its a great testament to the support that we can find existing for the GLBT community with in the Straight community. They weren’t two girls making out in the bar to get guys attention, they were to friends that wanted to help us represent our battle visually at our yearly celebration. So while you absorb or don’t absorb this info remember its something that in true context you should take as heavily as a “did you know” fact on Pop-Up video.
